Leadership Message

Dear Friends and Supporters,

In what will go down as one of the most challenging years in our history, The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) experienced never-before-seen levels of food insecurity, which continue today. Across Eastern Massachusetts, nearly 700,000 (1 in 8) are struggling to put food on the table. This problem is even worse for children. The pandemic has caused food insecurity among children to rise 117% in Eastern Massachusetts so that now 1 in 5 children live in a home that is food insecure. According to Feeding America, food insecurity has risen for both the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (59%) and Eastern Massachusetts (66%) compared to pre-COVID levels, giving our state the unfortunate distinction of having the greatest projected annual increase in food security in the country in 2020.

Just as astounding has been the record-breaking response we have received from you, our volunteers, food and financial donors. Thanks to your generosity and the extraordinary efforts by Team GBFB and our network of more than 600 distribution partners, we were able to help in ways we never imagined. We distributed over 98 million pounds of healthy food (the equivalent of 82 million meals), raised financial resources to purchase an additional $30 million for food, and invested more than $3 million in the GBFB partner distribution network to support COVID-19 response efforts.

Alongside our pandemic response, we successfully campaigned for Breakfast After the Bell legislation. This new state law now requires all public K-12 schools, in which at least 60 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, to offer breakfast after the start of the school day. This legislation will provide meals to over 150,000 children across our state, directly impacting childhood hunger.

We also made history by fully financing a new food distribution model – the Mystic Community Market (MCM) – in Medford, MA.  This program in collaboration with two community partners has already distributed more than 1.2 million pounds of healthy food to neighbors in need. It is our hope to do more of this innovative investment.

Your dedicated and generous support during this difficult year allowed us to help more people than ever before. We thank you for standing with us and supporting our mission as we strive to create a hunger free Eastern Massachusetts and end hunger here.

Financial Summary

*SHARED MAINTENANCE: GBFB receives shared maintenance fees from its member agencies in order to offset the cost of handling and redistributing donated food, as recommended by Feeding America. In FY20 these charges ended in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highlights of the Year

No matter the circumstance, The Greater Boston Food Bank works passionately to end hunger across Eastern Massachusetts by providing our neighbors in need the healthy food they need to thrive. Not even unparalleled levels of food insecurity brought on by the pandemic discouraged our resilient team and partners from marching on with our mission this year. Thank you to all who have made these accomplishments possible.

Food insecurity on the rise

As the demand for food during the COVID-19 crisis continues to rise, GBFB remains committed to our mission. Your support enables us to distribute food to neighbors in need during these unprecedented times.

By the Numbers

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts by Team GBFB and our network of more than 600 distribution partners, we were able to help in ways we never imagined.

Resiliency and the Eastern Massachusetts emergency food network

During the pandemic, our network of food pantry partners reported an increase of 149% in the number of children served and 104% increase in the number of households served (YOY from July 2019 to July 2020).

The resiliency of our 600+ distribution partners across Eastern Massachusetts was instrumental in the efforts to feed our struggling neighbors during these unprecedented times. In order to bolster GBFB partner agencies during the pandemic, GBFB invested over $3 million in the network in FY20 (Oct. 1, 2020 – Sept. 30, 2021) to support COVID-19 response efforts.

The GBFB agency network experienced less closures than our Feeding America food bank peers, who reported over ten percent of their agencies closed or suspended operations in the month of August. By September 2020, only six percent of GBFB pantries remained closed.
